Ted Key Events Illustration & Caricatures

Ted Key is a live wedding artist who specializes in creating vibrant naturalistic scene drawings of ceremonies, cocktail hours and first dances, in watercolor as well as providing the optional service of more humorous playful portraits of guests at weddings.

His ceremony sketches are A3 watercolour and ink impressions that will capture the mood and the energy of your big day. These sketches are more naturalistic than the humorous portraits and they are all about the moment. His ceremony sketches typically take an hour (he starts drawing the scene 30 minutes before the ceremony starts and finishes it as the ceremony ends) but he also offers longer, more detailed, 2 hour ceremony sketches that he starts before the ceremony, details during and completes after the ceremony. His cocktail hour sketches will usually be a series of 45 minute sketches and first dance drawings take around 30-45 minutes. 



Ted’s other service is caricature portraits. The guests won’t have to sit long either. He draws 18-20 faces an hour in black and white! That’s around 3 minutes per face, 6 minutes per couple. In color he would draw around 15 faces an hour. These drawings provide both great entertainment and laughter for the guests being drawn and watching on as well as providing a gift to the guests which they can take home. He focuses on capturing the character and expressions of those sitting rather than just drawing big features and he draws on his experience as a picture book illustrator to do this. Ted draws these portraits on firm art paper in smudge proof ink. He gives each guest a neat envelope to keep the drawing safe in case your dear uncle Milton puts his pudding down on it.

Ted has drawn at dozens of weddings scenes and thousands of festive faces, young and old. He is Cape Town based and has drawn all over the Western Cape and also travels to other provinces across the land for weddings.
