We met at a school social in grade 8. After 5 years of being good friends, we finally began to date the year after we matriculated. He made it out of the friend zone!
We went to Bosman Wine Farm in the Hemel and Aarde Valley in Hermanus. Carl reserved a little wooden and glass house on the farm. He proposed on the front porch of the house with a view of the ocean, pine forest and vineyards. After the proposal, we met our closest friends and family for a surprise engagement party in Onrus.
I loved planning our wedding. I started quite early with the planning, which certainly mitigated the stress. Everything went smoothly and we really enjoyed working with our suppliers. I used SAWeddings.co.za for inspiration.
We realised quite early that Covid-19 was one factor that we could not manage, and that checking the daily infection rates only caused unnecessary stress. We had our back-up plans in place, but thankfully the wedding could continue as planned and almost all of our guests could attend. We were very fortunate.
I started the planning process by taking inspiration from websites such as SAWeddings and made a Pinterest board on which I saved many photos. I quickly realised what the general theme was that I was interested in and chose our décor and wedding colours accordingly.
The entire day was unforgettable. The most special part of the day was seeing each other for the first time. It felt as if we were the only two people in the chapel. It was a moment that I’ll cherish forever.
We did not have an overall wedding theme, but we were inspired by a “romantic candlelight” dinner. The entire reception area was lit up by candlelight and the tables were beautifully decorated with dark green leaves, white flowers and a touch of light pink.
I initially planned to have my wedding dress made. I went to try on some wedding dresses to see whether the style of the wedding dress that I had in mind would work with my body shape. However, the second dress I tried on at my fitting just felt right. It was “something else” and not what I had in mind, but I immediately fell in love with the dress!
The bridesmaids wore light pink dresses which also fit in with the wedding theme. The dresses complimented them, and they looked stunning.
We used light pink and white flowers with dark green leaves for our tables and the wedding arch. The colour combination is soft, natural and peaceful, which very much fits in with our idea of how a marriage should be.

Each bride-to-be’s point of departure should be to create to-do list of things to organise and hire or purchase, and to set a realistic budget for each task. Stick to the budget! Most suppliers do their best to fit into your budget and they are incredible at what they do. Don’t be afraid to research your suppliers diligently.
We had the most wonderful local honeymoon. Our country’s natural beauty is truly second-to-none. We stayed at The Moonrise Dome on the La Bruyere Farm in Tulbagh, the Waterfall Pod at Melozhori Private Game Reserve in Stormsvlei, the Whitehouse Eco Cabin on Montevue Nature Farm in Montagu and the Summit Villa at KumbuKumbu in Montagu.
