'Leading Ladies' - Cheri van Staden

Cheri van Staden is a household name in the events and wedding industry. Having been involved within the industry for over eight years, her dynamic personality, passion and incredible knowledge is certainly something you want at the helm of your next big event or special celebration.

Tell us a little about your personal style and how it’s evolved with your business?

"Personal style is an interesting one as it changes all the time! What I can say, is that my personality is evident in all that I do, including how I operate my business. I am a complete love-bird (this is evident in my 11 year marriage to the most amazing man on earth!) I believe in what I do so it’s really easy to “sell” – I want everyone to have a love story like mine! I am very blessed to have the most amazing clients and I thrive on every minute of working with them, creating something that they have dreamed of."

Having been in the wedding industry for ages, you must have seen a lot of trend-shifts. Is there anything bridal-wise that you foresee as being a big trend in this next season?

"Trends are ever-changing and the only one I really pay attention to is the forecast Pantone colours as they are evident throughout most themes. Sometimes Brides can get too focused on a trend and how to incorporate it into their day and this is often challenge, because if you're trying to incorporate it just because it’s a trend, you probably shouldn’t. Trends should draw your eye and your heart at the same time, if they don’t, they may not be for you – and that’s perfectly okay! Your wedding is supposed to be personal; a reflection of you. Let the trends guide you on your decision making processes not make the decisions for you…"

Any tips for avoiding massive wedding-planning faux pas and is there anything in the wedding industry that’s a big ‘no no’ for you personally?

"Communication, communication, communication… We see so many errors caused by lack of communication. This leaves huge room for error and if there is even a little gap in your planning you are in for trouble. We advise that you communicate openly and as often as possible to ensure that all parties know exactly what you mean. A big no-no would be duplication – there is a difference between doing something similar and doing something the same. People put a lot of time, effort and love into what they do, so- if you see something done by someone else, put your own spin on it to make it your own."

Being a successful businesswoman and constantly on-the-go, how do you unwind and spend any free time you may have?

"That’s an easy one - and also one that most people know about me! I spend time with my gorgeous husband and daughter in every spare moment I can get hold of. They keep me real, grounded and most importantly, happy. On top of that, I make sure I kick my own butt in the gym as much as possible, its good for me to have a physical outlet. I rely very heavily on my faith and continuously count my blessings."

Any advice for women wanting to go into this industry or even start their own business in a related field?

"It is a notoriously tough industry to get into, being exceptionally competitive and infamously cliquey. However, that said, it is also hugely rewarding. My hope would be for more of the women in the industry to support each other and loose the perception of threat to embrace the support we have to offer one another. Work hard, have a strong moral and ethical compass and just absolutely love what you do, it shows! Distinction is also key - with the industry producing more and more planners daily, the market is flooded with raw and experienced talent alike all pushing hard for the business. Set yourself and the work you do apart, do your homework and stand out enough to give people a reason to book your services. Believe in yourself and the rest will follow..."

Lastly, for the beautiful brides-to-be, any tips before you start the planning process?

"Book 2iC Projects as your wedding planner?! In all seriousness, the best tip would be to spend time with your soon-to-be-spouse and figure out what you both really want from your big day. This will allow you to go into the process together and enjoy it from the word go. It’s the start of a beautiful journey together and a significant part in your love story so make sure your expectations are aligned. Once you have a plan, figure out if your budget allows for the services of a wedding planner, if not- try for just a few consultations to at least to get you on the right track – remember, we really are the experts!"
