What is the main reason for having a videographer on your wedding day?

Your wedding day is one of the biggest days of your life, and so much goes into planning this amazing day to become one with the person of your dreams. Most brides will tell you that their wedding day was over in the blink of an eye and they wish they could experience it again.

Video captures the story and moments in all their glory, from start to finish. Video doesn't only capture moments in time, but time itself. Whole and complete quality moments, 25 photos per second of video. Choosing to have a wedding video means that you can watch your wedding day happen again, in motion, before your eyes. Voices, expressions and emotions are captured fully and in depth. You are risking losing and forgetting these moments if you choose not to take video.

Videography costs are usually quite high. Can you explain what goes into creating a video?

It all starts with the quality and amount of equipment required to film a wedding day. Then the skill, training and talent required in a videographer does not come easy. Thirdly, the editing process is extremely time-consuming. It can take an experienced videographer anything from 45-80 hours to complete a wedding video and that is usually before final checks and re-editing begin.

You are also paying for the experience of a videographer, for example the amount of weddings they have shot before yours to perfect their style and skill.

How does a couple go about choosing a videographer?

Explore your options and educate yourself. There are a lot of choices when it comes to video and you do not want to have regrets after the fact. Look at lots of videos of videographers you like with your partner. When you watch the videos they must resonate with your heart and emotions. As you watch you should ask yourself, is this how I want to feel watching my video one day? Do I love the style and the way it tells a story? Would I want my love story to be told in this way for my children and children's children to watch?

Obviously then ask around for packages and prices and go for the best you can within your budget. But do set out a good budget for this, because besides the photos, this is all you will have to remember and commemorate this massive day.

With photographers, you get different styles of shooting. Does the same apply to videography?

Yes there are many different styles, the biggest one, in my opinion being the difference between documentary/journalistic style video and cinematic style video. A documentary-style video has a chronological timeline and tends to have a more natural vibe, whereas cinematic does not stick to a chronological storyline and leans towards more planned studio/film like shots.

Do you have any other key tips or advice to share with brides when it comes to videography?

Ask your guests to not film or take photos. This is your day, you have paid a lot for professional videos and photos and they came to attend your wedding, not document it. Plus it looks terrible on the photos and video and can make our job really hard.

Also, make sure you match your videographer and photographer well. For example, if your photographer uses a lot of flash it can really ruin a natural-style video, so find out as much as you can about how things work on the day with both parties so you get the best photos and video possible.

Remember that this day is about you and your best friend becoming one and that should be the focus! Have fun with them, don't sweat the small stuff and make great moments together. It will also make for a great video
