A Magical Stay For Honeymooners

We've found the perfect little spot in paradise along the Garden Route! Trogon House is the most magical forest holiday destination and we were lucky enough to spend some time at this beautiful spot.

When arriving at Trogon House, all your stress and worries will automatically vanish as you head into the forest for what will most likely be one of the most special holidays of your life. The glass rooms looking out onto the forests, the expansive pool and wooden deck and the magical forest spa is something you need to experience.

We sat down for a few minutes with Nicci Coltham who tells us exactly what makes this venue so special and unique...

How long has Trogon House been around for?

Trogon House was built in 2006 and run as a Boutique Hotel by the owners for the first couple of years. Unfortunately that wasn’t very successful and the property changed hands a number of times. I took over in 2013 and we gave the lodge a new identity – a Guest Lodge B&B and for the past 5 years it’s been incredibly successful and continues to go from strength to strength.

Tell us a bit about Trogon House's history

The lodge itself is approximately 12 years old and belongs to a South African couple who travelled Africa extensively specializing in Antique Furniture trade. The vision of Trogon House was their concept and they were fortunate enough to furnish the lodge with the most beautiful and special pieces which all have their own story and history.

A bit about the owners of Trogon House...

At the helm of this unique venue is South African born Nicci Coltham. Nicci has more than 20 years’ experience in the hospitality industry working in some of the most prestige locations in Southern Africa. After studying International Hotel Management and gaining invaluable work experience, she has dedicated the last 5 years to putting Trogon House & Forest Spa on the map and hopes to continue growing the establishment along with the help of her amazing Trogon Team.

The team consists of Lodge Manager, Lize-Mari Delport, who joined Trogon House in October 2015 and has been so hands on with all aspects of the operation. Bruce, Herrie and Marco, whom have been part of Trogon House from the very beginning - they have lived in the area for many years and know Trogon like the back of their hands. These awesome guys are here to assist, wherever it may be, with their impeccable manner, outstanding vocabulary, and of course their fantastic sense of humour and unwavering dedication.

Were any wild animals spotted in the forests surrounding Trogon House?

We are very blessed with our indigenous forest location and due to that we’re privileged to see many wild animals and birdlife. The most iconic for Trogon House is of course the Narina Trogon which is a magnificent, very shy and rather rare forest bird, part of the Trogonidae family. This is also where Trogon House gets it’s name.

During the summer months there are approximately 7 mating pairs in the surrounding forest and we get to see them often. We also see the wild baboons and vervet monkeys that live in the forest. We've also spotted genet, porcupine, bush pig (very rare to see) and the odd boomslang but the MOST EXCITING sighting was a couple of months ago when I saw a large male leopard walking along the dirt road – only about 600m from the lodge!

For those wanting to explore a bit, are there any walking trails at Trogon House?

There is one particular hiking trail on the property which leads down to the river that runs at the bottom of the valley. It’s a gorgeous walk and will take approximately 2 hours return. You can also walk to a number of activities and sanctuaries close by (approx. 1.4km) to Monkeyland, Birds of Eden, Elephant Sanctuary and Africanyon.

Tell us a bit about the dining experience at Trogon House. Who is responsible for all the cooking?

At Trogon House we offer a very generous 3 course meal, which is Proudly South African! No fine dining or A la Carte, but a set menu designed with some of South Africa’s family favourites - it’s a great home cooked meal from starters to dessert. The cooking is shared between myself and 2 staff members; Bruce & Lize-Mari – all with our own flare and flavours, you are guaranteed to love what we serve!

Why should Trogon House be the number one honeymoon destination?

Trogon House & Forest Spa is an exceptional choice for Honeymooners!!! Not only will you feel like you’ve escaped from reality and ended up in some exotic location, but you will truly be able to totally unwind from the chaos of ‘The Wedding’. It’s peaceful and surrounded by the most magical forest.

The rooms are beautiful and comfy with a wide range depending on budget…but of course the Honeymoon Suite is our flagship suite. All of that married with our unique glass Spa Room where you can book additional extras such as massages, spa experience or different packages.
