Magical Moments

It was just the happiest day! Full of love and smiles, and it was so "us". Our rescue dogs were part of the ceremony, we got married in front of our nearest and dearest in one of our favourite places in the world on the West Coast, the music was spot on, the bubbles were flowing and everyone just had a ball.
We had some hiccups in the planning phase, but despite that it all worked out perfectly on the day. Despite having a very expensive dress made which I was not happy with, lots of ZAR later, I found my dream dress and felt like a princess! Our venue had to cancel 2 weeks before the big day (it was devastating for the venue and for us), but we manged to pull off a last minute alternative and it all worked out beautifully! I mention the hiccups because at the end of the day, the people around you, and the person you are marrying, is everything!! (and feeling like a million bucks in your dress)

The Honeymoon

We went to Panama. It was amazing! Not many people realize that Panama runs from east to west and has both the Caribbean and Pacific Ocean on either side. We got a total island holiday, together with some romantic central American city exploring in the old town of Casco Viejo. Think beautiful buildings, cocktails, rum bars, Latin American music and beautiful weather!

My Special Day

I always envisaged being a boho bride, but at the end of the day I ended up going pretty glam! Even though we had quite a rustic beach wedding. I'm so happy with the end result because I think you need to feel amazing on your day - and my Enzoani creation (sourced from Brides of Somerset) did just that. It fitted like a glove, had the most gorgeous low back and overall silhouette and was quite a sexy dress, I suppose. My husband had 1 stipulation - look "hot" :) For me, getting my dress made by a designer turned out to be a disaster so I am firmly of the "buy" camp. That mock fitting can only show so much before the material gets cut, and in my experience the finished product was a huge disappointment. Luckily Enzoani came through in the end!
Hair and Makeup was by the amazing duo , Nandi & Alet. They both are very experienced in the film, and modelling industry so I knew I was in great hands. Makeup was quite natural except for the dramatic eyelashes. Falsies are a must on your wedding day I believe.
I hate the idea of fussy up-dos for a bride, but because I had such a gorgeous low back on my dress, I had to keep my hair up. We went for a messy low bun, with lots of face framing tendrils.
I spent ages looking for the right shoes and at the end of the day ended up buying the same pair that my Mom bought for the wedding - a super sparkly pair from "I Love Shoes" at YDE. They were very glam, but had a block heel which meant they were super comfortable to walk in.
All that was required for lingerie were some panty-style spanx - not major spanx but just the right fit to avoid panty lines and make sure any lumps and bumps on the hips and stomach were smoothed over.
On accessories, I kept it minimal except for the divine drop pearl earrings lent to me by my mother. I think they were relatively inexpensive and from Forever New.

The Venue

We got married in Paternoster. Such a romantic, and special place. We had a bit of a hiccup with our original planned venue having to cancel 2 weeks before the day! But everyone rallied and made a plan. The ceremony was held on a verge in front of the beach and the reception was held at a lovely restaurant called De Seekat. The venue was transformed into a beautiful space with loads of flowers and twinkling lights and candles. It had a wonderful rustic charm with beautiful sea views - it also happened to be close to a full moon that night and it made for a beautiful vista. Luckily Paternoster has loads of guest houses and our guests all stayed over and made a weekend of it!

My Bridal Beauty Regime

To be honest, I did nothing out of the ordinary - I'm a less is more kind of girl and some of those smaller details just didn't seem too important to me. I made sure I got my hair highlights touched up 2 weeks or so before the big day, and my bridesmaids organised for the Fox Box team to come through to my house after my bachelorette to give me, and the whole bridal squad, manicures and pedicures - Gelish of course for staying power! I tried my best to be healthy in the run-up to the day, but with bachelorette parties and other weddings in the months before, that plan didn't work out too well! Luckily the dress had a bit of room to spare!

Wedding Elements

Flowers, flowers, and more flowers! Plus some decorative glass jars and candles - all supplied by our original venue turned planner. I wanted a 1 stop solution - venue, co-ordinators, and decor all in one. Plus the real beauty of the day was in the natural West Coast surroundings.

My Groom And His Groomsmen

Lastminute.com is an accurate description here. The groom had a fairly specific idea of the suit he wanted - blue is too common so we went with a dark green 3 piece suit tailored by the ever friendly and affordable Tidy Tucs Tailor at the Waterfront. My Dad had a blazer made there in the same colour. The groomsmen wore their own chinos with blue shirts and funky bowties from Robert Daniels. They all looked very dapper.

Beautiful Bridesmaids

I am unashamedly totally behind the rose gold trend for bridesmaids - I wanted them to all look unique so told them to each purchase a dress they felt good in - only requirement was that it be rose gold / blush and long. I liked that they got to pick their dresses and rose gold is such a popular colour at the moment that there was so much choice! They looked absolutely beautiful. Their dresses complemented each other but being slightly different shades and styles really created a wonderful dimension, rather than being matchy matchy. I think all the girls based in SA got their dresses from YDE and my UK based bride squad ladies sourced their dresses online.

Marriage Officer

We wanted to have our ceremony "officiated" by friends and family. We are not religious, and even though there are non-denominational marriage officers out there, we didn't want a stranger conducting such an important event. Accordingly, we found a lovely marriage officer called David Smit who agreed to officially marry us, but not actually conduct the ceremony. He met us the day before the wedding and we signed all the paperwork, and were legally wed in front of him. Our ceremony was just that - a ceremony and celebration of our love, but not the official moment. We even went and fake signed a register before walking back down the aisle as husband and wife.

My Captured Moments

We had Thunder & Love as our wedding photographers and I couldn't be happier with the choice. Simon & Shan are a husband and wife duo who love telling love stories. Their photos are like fine art! They captured the day beautifully but were also so special just to have around. I was so nervous and Shan was such a calming influence. Their photos definitely have a certain, slightly darker edge to them, but without being somber. I was so pleased with the result. They also took some amazing shots using old school film! So romantic and special.
The day after our wedding, they had uploaded 30 pics as part of the sneak peek and we got our full set of photos, electronically and our favourite images in a photo book pretty quickly afterwards. They are quick, efficient and so talented. They also preferred to drive straight back to Cape Town on the night so they could start editing - we saved on accommodation costs in that respect which was an added bonus.
We didn't hire a videographer which I do regret a little. We just ran out of time honestly. It would be nice to be able to watch it happening and to hear some of the speeches again.
We didn't use a photo booth - I think they are fun, but we had a budget and we decided to rather spend it on the basics and not any gimmicks i.e. food, and drink, and dancing, and music!

The Wedding Planner

Not specifically no. However, the venue we selected were very hands on and helped to co-ordinate.

Wedding Transport

We didn't use any fancy transport - being in Paternoster, everything was very walkable!

Food & Cake

The food was cooked by the head chef at Gelukkie in the kitchens of De Seekat. It was typical West Coast fair and absolutely delicious!
Our wedding cake was made by the very talented Kanya Hunt - it was divine. Chocolate cake covered with white chocolate pieces - the flowers on the cake were also constructed out of white chocolate.

Wedding Stationery

We kept it digital and used Paperless Post for our invitations and save the date cards. I designed our seating chart online using Canva and then got it printed on some wood and mounted on an easel. My mom printed the guests' names on labels and attached them to sea shells which served as seat markers. My mother in law also labelled the wedding favours which were made by her, with each guest's name.

The Reception and Entertainment

The party was lit :) We didn't take dance lessons - our first dance was wonderfully simple, but so special as it was outside on the street in front of the restaurant surrounded by sparklers. Our song was Wait For Me by Kings of Leon and it was one of the best moments of the night! We then all hit the dance-floor, DJ'd by That DJ Guy! It was such a jol!
