Married on Sep 24, 2017 in Eastern Cape

The Proposal

Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought that I would be standing in front of the Eiffel Tower, with the love of my life down on bended knee asking for my hand in marriage!

Ra'ees joined me in Paris at the end of my work trip in March 2017. He warned me not to go sightseeing before he arrived because he had planned a whole itinerary for us. The day after he arrived, we started our "sightseeing" day at 6am. I wondered why we had to start our day this early because all the shops and activities would be closed at this ungodly hour- but I wasn't allowed to ask any questions. This was not out of the ordinary though- Ra'ees loves surprising me and he is really good at planning fun-filled itineraries. I had no doubt that the day was going to be awesome.

Our first stop was Trocedero. As soon as we left the subway, we landed on the Tracodero platform with the sight of the majestic Eiffel Tower right in front of us. With no-one else around, and the sun rising in the background made it all the more magical. Ra'ees sat me down on one of the ledges on the side, gave me his phone and earphones and told me to watch a video. It was a compilation of videos by our friends and family giving the reasons why they love me. It was so special and heart warming. When the video ended, he lead me to the middle of the platform, directly in front of the Eiffel Tower. He proceeded with the sweetest heartfelt speech He then asked me to close my eyes and told me that he had asked my parent permission. When I opened my eyes, he was down on one knee holding up a massive diamond ring! So many feelings ran through me- I had felt like a little girl with butterflies in her tummy wanting to jump up an down! It was so surreal! After dating for 9 years and with this awesome proposal, obviously I said yes! We hugged and he span me around. After taking in the moment, he pointed to a photographer (Tara Lengyel) who was a few meters away from us. He had found her on Craig's List and arranged for her to capture the entire moment- talk about being prepared! We then immediately went on an engagement photoshoot along the river banks of the Seine.

What an unforgettable experience!

Magical Moments

The highlights of our wedding were beautifully captured by our videographer. See our wedding trailer here: https://www.facebook.com/zunaidjacobsfilms/videos/1999255083651064/

One of my favourite moments of the day was walking down the isle while our friend, the talented Tiffany, sang Ed Sheeran's Perfect so eloquently. This was literally two days before the song was officially released.

The Honeymoon

Bali had been our bucket list for far too long. So, it was no surprise that we chose Bali as our honeymoon destination. We thoroughly enjoyed our trip there. Ra'ees never quite bought into the idea of "chilling by the pool side" type honeymoon! We were in a foreign country and we needed to explore it. Needless to say, he planned a rather active honeymoon, site seeing, snorkeling etc. We would not have had it any other way.

A cherry on top, was that I managed to achieve another one of my dreams- seeing 30 countries by the time I turn 30- 2 years ahead of schedule!

The Venue

Our family and friends are spread all over South Africa. We were both born in Port Elizabeth, I lived in Pretoria during high school and we both studied at UCT and now live Cape Town. However, we decided to host our wedding back home in Port Elizabeth. Given that many of our family and friends would have had to travel to attend our wedding, we consciously picked a wedding date over a long weekend- 24 September. An added benefit is that we would celebrate our anniversaries on a public holiday!

The wedding ceremony was conducted in Masjidul-Abraar, a mosque etched in my family's history. My great grand father was an Imaam of the mosque and my mother grew up in the same street as the mosque. Guests were then invited for breakfast at the South End Museum across the road. This museum also reflected the heritage of my parents as this was their home before the Group Areas Act came into effect.

Our evening reception for our 400 guests (yes, 400!) was held at the stunning Running Waters venue in Kragga Kamma. I fell in love with the venue as soon as I saw it.

Wedding Elements

I am totally obsessed with Cherry Blossoms! So, that had to be the theme for my wedding. I searched high and low for fresh cherry blossoms with no avail. Turns out that South African cherry farmers prefer to wait for the flowers to turn into actual cherries! Luckily, we were able to source some pretty artificial ones from Johannesburg- but then it had to be transported to PE.

Beautiful Bridesmaids

My bridesmaids and flower girls wore rose gold sequins. I found the fabric at Elegance in Cape Town. What made things more exciting is that my bridal party were spread across South Africa but I wanted a single seamstress to make their dresses- for consistency. Trying to co-ordinate all of this proved to be rather challenging! But I think it paid off-they were simply adorable!

My Captured Moments

Our wedding photographer was Ewald Stander from Plettenberg Bay and our videographer was Zunaid Jacobs from Cape Town. We had seen some of their work and were thoroughly impressed with their creative style and thus chose them to capture the moments from our special day

Tell us about your wedding transport.

Our wedding car was my brother in-law's a vintage VW Kombi. He towed it all the way from Pretoria to PE just for our wedding. Totally loved the extra space, especially with my princess style dress in the morning and my 1m train of my afternoon dress.

Food & Cake

My cousin is an amazing talented baker and she made my three tier wedding cake.
My sister (one of 4- yes we are 5 sisters!) has a creative business (Creative Artistry) where she makes bespoke items. She made my cake topper with the word "Always". It was made in rose gold and glitter. I loved the word "Always" - its so simple but so meaningful. It also linked well with ending of my speech: "Ra'ees, it has always been you. It was you yesterday. It is you today. It will be you tomorrow and the rest of my life."

Wedding Stationery

My other sister runs a visual production company (Shoot 97) which has a graphic's department. She and her team were kind enough to design all my wedding stationary- and they are super talented! They designed our Save the Date animated video using the photo's from our engagement shoot in Paris along with Beyonce's Halo as a backing track. They designed our electronic wedding invite- also an animated video plus the physical wedding invitations. Here the cherry blossoms theme started to pull through strongly.

As wedding favours, we gave the guests a little envelope with seeds in the them. My sister and her team designed those too with the same theme (fonts, colours, cherry blossoms etc) as the invitation. The wedding favours had little sayings like "Let love grow. A small wedding favour for you to sow, to celebrate our love and watch it grow" and "Let love bloom. Plant these seeds and watch them bloom, just like the love of this bride and groom"
