How did your love story begin?

In 2008 during my first year at university, a handsome tutoring student assisted me during a chemistry practical. A few years later this same student, now an employee at the university, assisted us in cleaning the laboratory after we got in trouble for flooding the floor. Another few years later in 2014, I was invited to do my Masters degree in the same handsome guy's laboratory. We started talking and realized we have so much in common. One very late night, I had a huge craving for chocolate, upon telling Paul this, he left his friends to bring me my chocolate. After that we were inseparable!!

Tell us all about the proposal.

My husband and I are both nature enthusiasts. Our first big holiday together was a camping trip in the Kruger National Park. We enjoyed it so much and made so many special memories there that it feels magical every time we visit the park. In December 2015 my husband and I took my brother with us to go camping in the park. On the second last day of our trip, my husband convinced my brother not to join us for the very early morning drive and somehow convinced me to go to our favorite bird hide close to Satara rest camp. Fortunately, when we got there, we were the only people in the bird hide. This particular bird hide is very special to us and it has become a tradition to visit the same bird hide every time we are in the park. As we sat there looking at the spectacular view and enjoying the sounds of nature I said: "This place is really amazing and so special I can literally sit here and enjoy the view with you the whole day!". My husband replied: "Yes it is very special to us and this is exactly where I want to ask you to marry me!". As he said this he lifted himself off the bench and went down on one knee in front of me. I was so shocked I could not do anything else but grab him around the neck and cry. I was so speechless that I even forgot to answer his question properly. Obviously, I said yes, and now that bird hide will always be the spot where our happy ever after officially started!!

Magical Moments

There were so many moments that selecting just a few is almost impossible. If I had to select a few: The first highlight was the fact that we had a weekend wedding and we could spend some quality time together with our guests around a huge boma fire on Friday night. The best highlight of the whole weekend was when I saw my husband for the first time on Saturday. We decided to have photos taken before the ceremony. So the photographer took my husband to a preselected place and blindfolded him. I then removed the blindfold so that he could see me for the first time in my dress. It was such a special moment and the photographer caught every emotion on camera! Another special moment is the most obvious one, and that is our first kiss as husband and wife! My husband brew our own special wedding beer. He brew a chili chocolate stout that we gave to the guests as wedding favors.

The Honeymoon

Oh yes, we did!! We spent one and a half weeks traveling to 5 different rest camps in the Kruger National Park! We just had to go back to where every thing started, and of course, we visited our favorite bird hide again!!

My Special Day

I wanted my wedding look to be plain and simple. My dress was a soft white plain dress with just a bit of added volume. I called it my business-in-the-front and party-at-the-back dress. I decided to go with a simple messy braid look for my hair in order to make the detail of my dress at the back pop. I paired the dress with white lace covered peep toe wedges, small silver straight earrings, and small butterfly hair clips. One of the most special pieces of jewelry was my grandmothers silver bangle. This same bangle has accompanied me to every big event in my life so far; matric farewell and both of my graduations before the wedding. I decided to go with a very natural look for my makeup. Mari from Mari Bridal did an amazing job to make all of us look perfect! My dress had a very low back but had built-in support, so I could not wear any special lingerie.

The Venue

We held our special day at the Bush Willow tented camp in Glenburn Lodge. We held a weekend wedding and most of our guests arrived the Friday already. All of our guests stayed in permanent tents at the venue the Friday and Saturday night.

My Bridal Beauty Regime

Honestly, I did not go out of my way to prepare for the big day. My husband and I worked out 5 times a week at Virgin Active as we normally do. The week before the wedding, my mom came to stay with us. On the Wednesday before the wedding, my mom and I pampered ourselves with full body massages and champagne at Soulstice Day Spa and we got our nails done on Thursday at the Rose Serene Nail & Make-up Studio.

Wedding Elements

Since my husband and I both enjoy nature so much we wanted to have a very down to earth simple party with all of our closest friends and family. That is one of the main reasons why we selected the venue. Our wedding colours was predominantly white and dark purple arum lily colour. We decided to go with a very simple woody feel with our bonzai trees used as the main decor at the chapel. Pretty Bunches at Anro Flower farm did the most amazing simple flower arrangements focusing on using St. Joseph lilies, dark purple arum lilies, and dark purple lisianthus. All of the wooden boxes and reed mats that we used as decor was made by my husband. We rented simple white draping and chair covers at About Catering Hire.

My Groom And His Groomsmen

My husband decided to wear a dark gray suit, a white shirt, and a gray tie. To make his look even more special he decided not to wear the normal formal shoes but wore a pair of dark gray CAT sneakers with orange laces. His two groomsmen kept it simple with gray formal trousers and a plain white shirt. Since my husband and I are both engineers we wanted to incorporate some of that into the wedding, so my husband and his groomsmen all wore cuff links that looked like small water levelers.

Beautiful Bridesmaids

My one bridesmaid wore a dark purple infinity dress from Peaches & Spice and my other bridesman wore the same gray trousers than the groomsmen and a dark purple long sleeved shirt.

My Captured Moments

We had one of the best photographer teams every. The guys and girl from Greyline Photography did so much to ensure that they capture every single emotion, special moment and special memory possible during the day! Since meeting the guys at a bridal expo, we have become close friends and they ended up being guests at our wedding as well as our wedding photographers. These guys really go to the end of the earth to make sure that you enjoy your day. We did have a photo booth, which made for some fun and hilarious photos.

The Wedding Planner

No, my husband and I made most of the decor and organized the whole day on our own.

Tell us about your wedding transport.

The bridesmaids and I got ready in the honeymoon suite at the Glenburn Lodge hotel. Since the suite was so close to the chapel, I decided to ask my uncle if he could take us to the chapel in his new Mercedes Benz.

Food & Cake

Glenburn Lodge went above and beyond to prepare the best braai themed food for our wedding. The most talked about part of our wedding was the food. Our wedding cake and cup cakes were made by the Baker Boys situated in Pretoria. They make the best Lemon and yogurt cupcakes on this planet!!

Wedding Stationery

We did not have any stationery made. We used to make our own wedding website and managed the invitations from the website. The table numbers and menus we made ourselves.

The Party and Entertainment

My husband and I decided to take dancing lessons. The people at Fred Astaire Dance Studio helped us prepare for our first dance and they really helped make our dance extra special!! We had one of the best DJ's from Sonic State Productions that knew exactly what music to play the get the party going all night long!!
