Jared and I were married on my parents family farm in the foothills of the Drakensberg mountains in the sleepy town of Winterton. The pecan nut tree orchard and big grass field on the banks of the Sterkspruit River was transformed into my dream wedding venue. The whole wedding was very much DIY as well as a community affair. The people in our community are amazing and together we planned a day that will mark the end of life as I knew it. Jarry and I chose a rustic forest theme with elements of light and most of all... farm flavour. My talented Dad hand crafted all the outside decor such as the big wagon wheel bench and the old wagon wheel flower feature. He also hand made the steel gazebo that we were married under and we stood proudly on a Nguni skin while we said our "I do's." We are proudly South African and had to make our wedding an African affair for all the family members coming from all over the world. Let's just say... that they all came back home to our wedding and got a good dose of black label, biltong, sokkie music, zulu dancing and "gees." My 6 bridesmaids and I got ready at the beautiful Glenside Farm House where we felt spoilt and loved by the incredible hosts. Jarry and I decided to see eachother before the ceremony as a "Big Reveal." I walked across our dam wall and along with all the fond memories that go along with growing up as a South African on a farm, I made a new one.... Jared's face when he saw me for the first time as his bride. Our ceremony took place under the canopy of pecan nut trees that are exactly as old as I am as they were planted when I was born. Our reception looked a bit like this: Hessian and lace, light and glass, green and white. Simple yet elegant. The night was a blast with every single person, young and old ending up on the dance floor, dancing under an african sky full of stars and I could only feel great joy in my heart with a resonating gratefulness to be a bride in my beautiful country.
