Hein and I met each other in 2007 while we were in Standard 9, when at random we had both gone on Mxit's chat site. We are both shy people and dating sites were something we were not familiar with at all but seemed like an interesting way to meet someone.
Needless to say, when I saw "Gerhaldo" (Hein's second name) invited me to chat, I thought I should give him a chance. He sounded pretty exotic!
We started chatting and immediately felt butterflies. We would speak for hours, into the early hours of the morning and finally go to bed with a longing to meet one another in person. It was on one night when we were sitting outside (each on our own side of the country), we spotted a shooting star and made a wish. After 6 months, Hein took the bus from Bloemfontein to Klerksdorp to meet me in person. It must have been a scary experience for him as my family is quite large so all eyes were on him.
I remember the moment so perfectly. It was on 23 June, he stepped off the bus with his guitar , amp and bag in hand. He was wearing a beanie and his smile warmed my heart when he approached. He was so tall! (1.86m.. I was only 1.6m). The week he spent with me marked our path forever. It felt like we knew each other forever and even though I was so shy back then, the connection we shared was unbelievable.
The years to follow were not easy. We made turns on getting on the bus to visit each other during holidays and long weekends. Long distance really meant good communication.
Hein proposed to me in 2011 on top of the "koppie" overlooking Bloemfontein. I just remember my heart racing and the ol sweetheart was the man I was going to marry. Lots of things happened in between - travelling to Canada, studying, the possibility of moving to Canada etc. Until last year, we decided not to wait any longer.
We really enjoyed having a year to plan the wedding. Hein chose the colour scheme which helped a lot! Leading up to the day there were so many memorable moments and I will never forget the little moments on our wedding day.
There was also a special moment I shared with my twin sister Jade. It was after I got dressed and I was outside after taking the photos. My maid of honour asked "How are you feeling?". It was in that moment that I burst into tears. Looking up, I noticed my twin peeking through the window and as we made eye contact, we just kept crying. Being a twin is an incredible bond and everything I felt on my wedding day was felt even more having her by my side.
While it all feels surreal now, I could really feel and see all the emotions of our family and friends on the day. An intimate setting for our love story more than 9 years later.
