12 years ago two University students started having a conversation in a club about sushi of all things. They became great friends who shared lots of memories and times together. Hugo fell in love and continuously asked me to share more time with him, but I saw him as the boy next door…little did both I know that this was the beginning of a great love story.
Fast forward 10 years and we both meet up again at our friends wedding where things started to feel different. Time spent together was something different now. Time together meant butterflies and giggles. Today I know that the intensity of our love always scared me and it was something that I was only ready for at a later stage in my life.
Hugo and I started dating and making the mind switch from being friends to people that was in love. He had to go abroad to Europe and America for work and our love story continued through continents and time difference. Our money was spent on visiting each other and making this relationship work.
On the 1st of January 2016 Hugo surprised me while our family was having our Desember Camping holiday in Mosselbay. After (braaing) some steaks, we went for a walk on the beach where I grew up as a child. When Hugo popped a bottle of Champagne and said my name in a more formal tone, I instantly knew. He couldn’t even give a speech or go down on his knee, he just sat in the sand and blurted out if I would please marry him.
Hugo departed a few days later for work once again. Before he went, our wedding venue, photographer, videographer, pastor, wedding band, caterer and my dress designer was set…we only had 4 months till the big day.
We struggled through Skype calls and planning through time difference for our big day…but it was all worth it. Getting married was one of the best experiences and feelings ever. Not just to experience it as a couple, but to experience it with your family, bridesmaids, groomsmen and friends was priceless. It is the moments leading up to this celebration that makes it so special. Hugo and I knew that we only had this one time in our life to experience it, so we didn’t hold back on our wedding. Everything was as we wanted it, not because someone said it must, but every detail was according to our styles and personalities.
We will never forget the day that we said our forever I do’s. The day we made our promises in front of God and the people closest to us. This was a magical feeling that we will forever hold in our hearts.
Hugo and I decided to embark on a new journey after our wedding and we are both working together on Super yachts abroad. Our love for travelling and seeing new places together was the reason for our decision. We are very happy for this experience in our life and we continuously look back at our wedding video and photo’s with contentment, joy and excitement for what’s to come. We will always remember the special way we said I do.
