In 2012, after making some courageous life changes, my gorgeous husband mentioned he wanted to meet a "nice girl".
A mutual friend of ours promptly contacted me to arrange a setup. Not one for setups, I consented to scope him out for some of my single friends more comfortable with such situations. Martin was brought to Kerry's house for a braai by his friend Henk and once I entered it took all of 15 minutes for us to have exchanged numbers!
Needless to say my friends weren't even presented a chance.
Our first month of knowing each other was spent in separate provinces as he trained for a job in Johannesburg and I studied in Cape Town, but since his return to Cape Town we have been near inseparable.
We became engaged at a beautiful lookout in my area about a year and a half after meeting, and about a year later were married. (Though I feel as if we gradually "grew" into marriage before time)
Our day was naturally a special one.
Almost every aspect was handmade. My dad made our benches and cake stand. My granny made my guarter. My parents and brother assisted me in all the favors, flowers, bouquets, boutinears, centerpieces and signs. We hired birdcages from Blooming Wonderful Decor Hire, chair covers and tiebacks from Amore Decor Hire and bought bubbles from Sugarbird Wedding Favors. EVERYTHING else was on us!
We were supported by an army of loved ones in our bridal party. Martin's consisted of close friends (Nick, Daren, Alex, Henk) , his brother Hein and brother in law Kirk, with his sister Karien as his "best lady" and Roy as his "best man". Mine consisted of my Cape Town cousin's (Carmen, Roxanne, Kirsty-Sian) and close friends (Kerry, Thandi) with Shara and Lara as "maids of honor" and my brother Kireon as my "man of honor". Henk and Kerry of course had to be included ;).
The weather was exquisite.
Barring a few glitches (forgetting my cake toppers and forgetting to give out the bubbles for confetti, and having to find a new song for our first dance as our song had somehow disappeared!!! lol) the day ran smoothly and we were surrounded by our loved ones late into the night.
The venue was gorgeous, I felt like a princess, my husband looked too handsome for words, my girls looked stunning, the boys looked hawt, our parents were absolutely lovely and our guests looked great!
Our ceremony was filled with laughs and tears, joyous Godly messages, the scent of lavender and sunshine. My daddy accompanied me in my last walk as Miss Nikita McShane while my brother and his girlfriend serenaded me with Nat King Cole's L.O.V.E on ukulele.
The reception was warm, vibrant and colorful-peppered with funny and sentimental speeches, delicious food and cake, tropical scents, happy noise and cheers and lots and lots of dancing.
Monkey Valley Resort was the perfect venue and their event manager, Meireille, and my coordinator from Illuminate My Event (Kelly) made sure the things I couldn't manage on our day were done perfectly!
It was a fabulous and exhausting day, packed full of emotion and love!
I will always remember fondly our special moments on this day as we set out into this married journey as the Nels.
I am so grateful to have Martin by my side and our friends and family surrounding us in a supportive embrace. We are truly blessed.
Please enjoy Callum Tilbury Photography's photos of our special day! I have made some collages so you don't have to miss out! ;)
Your votes would be appreciated and best of love and luck to the other 2014 brides, especially Bianca Salgado who I danced with and Mia Mihaela Lukic-Dagnin who is a close friend of my beautiful cousin and bridesmaid, Carmen!
