My wedding surpassed all the dreams I had for the day. I had long had visions and ideas of what I wanted on the day but also wanted to keep within a reasonable budget. When asked what exactly it was I was aiming for, my answer was traditional with a twist.
The first obstacle we needed to overcome was booking a venue. WIth only 8 months between engagement and wedding and a list of specific requirements I was afraid we were not going to find what we were looking for that was still available. Luckily for us after visiting Nooitgedacht it was obvious that it was perfect, fulfilling all our requirements of an old world chapel, picturesque hall and beautiful outdoor surrounds perfect for photography.
I originally wanted to do all decor and flowers myself as I tend to be very particular but was luckily advised to go with a professional to avoid the extra stress on the day and found In Neva Ward, of Bright and Beautiful, someone who perfectly understood and created my vision. The brief she was given was of a base colour of green, which is my husband's favourite colour, but to incorporate pink and orange in the flower arrangements in order to make the hall less bland. I also incorporated these colours into the stationary for the day and menus, name cards and wedding favours of herb plants were all decorated by family and friends days before the wedding.
My wedding dress was an off white and very traditional with all the poof and glitter required. I also had a full length veil to complete my traditional dress. The groom and groomsmen were dressed in morning coats and cream coloured cravats and waistcoats made with love by the mother of the groom contributing to the formal air we desired for the occasion.
Our ceremony took place in the chapel with minimal decor and candlelight for atmosphere in order to enhance its Natural beauty. We asked the pastor of our church in Cape Town to conduct for us and had a spiritual ceremony with praise and worship as it was important for us that our wedding be a testimony of Christ and that the foundation of our marriage be rooted in our christian faith. I entered the church to an Avril Lavigne song kicking the traditional part. After saying our prescribed wedding vows we opted to add vows of our own and I was deeply moved and pleasantly surprised by the beautiful words writted by my husband.
After the ceremony and signing of the register in the manor house we were served canapes of sushi and mini burgers accompanied by ginger ale and lemonade on the grass. where we had set up games of cricket, bowls and croquet for the guests amusement during our photo session.
Our reception was less formal with only a few speeches. I have always loved dancing and so my husband and I took many lessons leading up to the day to ensure we were ready to open the dancefloor! After cutting and eating the most amazing red velvet cake that was decorated simply we did away with the formalities of bouquet and garter toss and proceeded to dance the night away.
We were told that weddings take on the personality of the bridal couple and it must be said that this was true of the whole day. I had so feared being nervous of everything going wrong but on the day somehow knew that all the planning was done and that the only thing left to do was enjoy. The only person to know what went wrong would be me. It was a magical day enjoyed by all!
