Genevieve Haupt Ronnie

Married on Apr 22, 2017 in Western Cape

Our Story

Lindsay and I were in the same class for the duration of primary school but never stayed in contact thereafter...until the era of social media. We said "hi" once or twice via the web. However in 2013, during a time that we both needed comfort and support a friendship developed. And in 2014 we officially started dating.

Our story
In September 2013, at age 28, I was diagnosed with stage 2 Hodgkins Lymphoma. I was set to start chemotherapy in October 2014. A few weeks before starting chemo, Lindsay (who was living in Johannesburg at the time) Facebook messaged me out of the blue, "how is life treating me?" My very honest response was "Crap! I have just been diagnosed with cancer! Your side?" He too had been going through a tough time, as he had been retrenched and actively seeking employment. We became a source of comfort and support over the next few months. At the end of January 2014 he decided to move back to Cape Town as he wasn't finding employment in Johannesburg. At the same time I was concluding chemotherapy and set to commence radiation.
In February 2014 we went to the movies as friends and then in March he accompanied me to a few of my radiation sessions. We sometimes joke that some of our first dates were him taking me to radiation.
In September 2015 he took me on a very exhausting hike of Constantia Nek, as I have always wanted to see the dams. And while we were having breakfast at the top of the Nek he handed me a letter asking me to be his wife.
We wanted to get married as soon as possible but decided to put it off until we had enough money. At the end of 2016 we decided that we don't actually need money , that we could still have a beautiful and simple wedding without it. We knew we wanted to get married in church and decided on the oldest Methodist Church in South Africa, Simon's Town Methodist. The church had an intimate hall attached and this is where we had our Reception a simple Tea. With the support of many of our family and friends it turned out to definitely be the best day of our lives!
