Walking through the forest with Johnny Clegg’s African Sky blue being played on guitar by one of your amazingly talented friends is probably a dream not many bride-to-be’s have, but it was mine, and my dream was reality and it was perfect!
The most beautiful thing that I will take away from our wedding day is the special memories made with our family and friends.
Our wedding encompassed exactly what Mark and I are all about, natural, easy going, simplistic and allowing the essence of nature to speak for us.
Having a lot of creative family and friends, and husband-to-be our wedding was a true DIY wedding. My absolutely talented sister, Kate Smith designed our wedding invitations, our wedding favours as well as designing and making my bridesmaids dresses, under the guidance of my almost hubby we spent many nights making dream catchers for the forest; to drift dreamingly around us at our ceremony. Mark, who works for a C and C routering company, also designed and cut all our wooden swallows and proteas that were placed around the venue and that were taken home as keep sakes by our guests.
I wanted to be very simple with the flower arrangements for the tables at the wedding reception and opted for mostly green garlands that ran the length of each of the tables, with just pops of colour from Ericas, blushing bride and wax flowers.
With my mom heading up the flower arranging on the tables my ideas turned to reality, we also had hoops of penny gum and olive branches hanging above the tables, all made by family and friends.
My bouquet was a different story, I wanted big and beautiful and my mom delivered! With the most beautiful proteas hand picked from a farm nearby my mom gave me the bouquet I had always wanted.
The list is never-ending with all the help we were offered for the day. My beautiful sister in law, Mieke de Wet who has her own beauty salon, Dapplewood health and skin care did my makeup for the day and it was stunning, knowing that I don’t often wear makeup she really knew what to do, and ensured that people still recognized me on the day. An old school friend of mine, Megan Ruth Wridegway helped me with my hair, an up and coming hairstylist she did an amazing job and I loved how she kept it natural and flowing.
Did I mention how creative Mark is, not only did he design and cut the wooden proteas and swallows and make the dream catchers but he is a talented artist and we managed to trade one of his oil paintings for a DJ, brilliant! Amanda Huntingford a very close family friend married us under the trees of the forest in front of our close family and friends, she spoke words that were meaningful and from the heart, many have mentioned it was one of the best ceremonies they have been to, and I would agree whole heartedly!
The reception was just as magical as the ceremony; fires were lit to keep the cool spring breeze at bay, and the festivities began, with beautiful speeches and delicious food it was a night to remember! It was just breathtakingly wonderful and I could not have asked for anything more and looking back out our photos, if I could, I would do it all over again, and again and again.
