Using Props in your Wedding Photos

Wedding photography has come a long way from the formal, structured and posed photos of our parents. More couples are incorporating artistic flair to their wedding photographs; they want it to be interesting and do incorporate a personal touch.

Locations that are meaningful to you can form a beautiful backdrop to your photos and then adding the necessary props can transform those photographs to reflect your fun and quirky side.

When you hear the word prop, you may think about three basic items often seen in wedding photographs, namely: a suitcase (usually a vintage one), a large golden frame, and a picnic basket. Thankfully, these days there are scores more! The ‘Just Married’ suitcase is long gone and is replaced with items more adventurous and personal – mobile items such as a hot air balloon and old trains are also seen on occasion! Props are to be chosen to create your own look.

If you’re looking for something a little more romantic, grab a feather fan and have the bride hide behind it, only letting her gorgeous eyes peek out over the edge. Do this in front of a beautiful softly lit background for a stunning, timeless photo. On the other hand, if you tend to shy away from the soft and mushy stuff, why not add a pair sunglasses and rustic boots to the look for an edgy flair. Otherwise, stick to a firm favourite: add a burst of colour to liven up your photos! Whether you opt for balloons, a lollipop or your bright shoes, choose something you love and have fun with some playful and original poses.

Why not mix things up a little and make use of the natural props that are available at your shooting location. Using vineyards, grass or even the blue sky can add a beautiful, dramatic effect. To incorporate these natural props into the photographs use different focal points. Not only will this make for beautiful photos but it will also create stunning settings where the couple can share romantic experiences.

To make the otherwise boring table or group photos more interesting, arrange a specific corner at the reception venue for your table photos. Add a few props that will compliment your theme or decor; for example feather boas, top hats, a chalkboard for notes or even just a few bubbles. Let your guests get creative while the photographer captures those moments for you.

Top Tip: Speak to your photographer before the wedding day about your locations and props, to get their input and to make sure that all your ideas are incorporated. If you need any more information about the use of props on your wedding day, contact Lélani from I do Photos.
