Truly gifted
At no other time in your life will you go shopping, make a list of lovely things you’d like to own, send it out to friends and family, then sit back and let them spend! Which is why it’s vital to get the etiquette right when it comes to your wedding gifts.
“A wedding gift list is really more of a service to your guests than to you,” says Fiona Hilton of gift registry company The Wedding Gift List. “You’ll soon realise you’re doing everyone a big favour by giving them a list of items to choose from that they are 100% sure you actually want!”
But the biggest hurdle isn’t how you ask (having a registry is fast becoming the ‘norm’), but what you ask for. While the only things you may be after are an Xbox and a pair of Jimmy Choos, “guests want to think they are helping you start your married life” warns Fiona, “so look for romantic items or things that show you are building a home.” While it’s your gift list, it’s their money and ultimately they will only buy a gift they feel comfortable giving.
Another trick to make your list more polite is to include choices that reflect your personality. “Some guests can find that buying off a list leaves them cold. A few items that are fun or show character make it more personal.” says Fiona.
