The Wedding Garter Tradition

Weddings are full of customs and traditions and one of the most celebrated wedding traditions is the tossing of the wedding garter. This practice of garter-tossing dates as far back as early as the mid-fourteenth century. In order to confirm the consummation of the union it was customary for a family member to retrieve a piece of the bride’s clothing, particularly an undergarment, because people believed the piece of clothing would bring good luck to the person who received it. Through the years the tradition was altered, as the bride was often in a hurry and had her clothing ripped as guests tried to grab a piece of her outfit.

The "garter," which was a garment used to hold up stockings, became the most popular item to try and get from the bride. The tradition evolved as the groom began to remove the garter himself and tossed it to the guests in order to keep the bride safe from the crowd.

Most people still incorporate this tradition today and it has become quite a fun part of the reception. The bride usually wears the garter on her right leg for the groom to remove it and then tosses it to all the single male guests. The gentleman who catches the garter is the happy recipient of the "good luck" and is said to be the next to be wed.

While some brides continue with the traditional way of doing the garter-tossing, others will wear two garters: one to be tossed at the reception and the other as a keepsake of her wedding day. Many brides choose blue garters so they have "something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue." However, brides can still use traditional white garters and even create garters to match their wedding theme colours. Some wedding couples even take the cheeky approach and substitute the tossing garter with a cute little g-string to catch the unsuspecting bachelor by surprise.

There are numerous ways to customize your wedding garter, which allow you to continue the tradition as well as make it a personal and fun part of your day.(Adapted from www.weddinginfosource.com)
