Photographs: White Doves
Ivan Merckel from White Doves has been a Dove racer for 20 years but has lately wandered into another part of this – not so well known – hobby: The Releasing of White Doves.
He has been kind enough to sit down with me and give me with the top 10 things to take into consideration when booking your white doves.
- They are very tame and can be hand held by the Couple.
- They cannot fly in the dark or after sunset.
- They must be released 2 hours before sunset to assure they arrive safely at home.
- Their ages are between 1 -4 years while partaking in this hobby.
- The releasing of doves must be weather permitting – they cannot fly in a thunderstorm but light rain won’t be a problem.
- They do get and most certainly need a lot of attention, grooming and training – they also get a lot of exercise.
- You can decorate your cage as you wish and according to the theme or colour scheme of the wedding.
- You are allowed to release them yourself – under professional supervision.
- Ivan only allows them within a 100km Radius in and around Cape Town. (They are to arrive safely in the Southern Suburbs).
- You can book from 2 – 40 doves for your wedding.
