When I first saw the photographs of Fred and Natassja’s wedding – a feeling of certain happiness came over me; not only does this couple look oh-so-in-love but their personalities are really showcased throughout their wedding. I absolutely adore colourful things; thus I wanted to know and see more. Thank you very much for sharing your love story! Enjoy!

Tell us your love story, how did it all begin?Fred and I met at a church gathering, we chatted for a while. A few weeks later we attended a 21st birthday party of a friend of ours. A friend mine that knew Fred and me well came and stood beside me. We both turned and looked at Fred and his brother and she asked “Which one will you go for”? I looked at Fred with his bouncy blond hair and good looks and said…That one! My friend grabbed my arm and pulled me across the floor to chat to him, well as you can see the rest is history!
How did he propose?Fred and I were dating for almost six years before he proposed. So as you can imagine, after year number five I started asking “so when do you want to get married?” I even left a ring at his place that fitted my ring finger if he ever felt the nudge to get married. For the past two years of our relationship, I lived in Stellenbosch and he lived in Johannesburg, I was busy with my Masters in Industrial Psychology at the time. For the past year we have spoken about getting married and every time my friends came to pick me up at the airport, they eagerly awaited to hear if I had a ring on my finger. |

On the weekend of 20 November 2010 he came and visited me in Cape Town. We had a conversation the week before and he mentioned that we are going away for the weekend and gave me an itinerary of what I should wear. Fred is a very romantic guy; I must admit I get a sniff in the nose. The week before he came over to my parents’ house and my mom and dad blabbered that Fred wants to take my dad for a beer and he is not sure why. I picked him up from the airport on the Friday and we drove straight to Franschoek where he booked us into a Guest Farm in the mountains.
The weather was overcast and it looked like it might rain but Mr Hammer was very adamant to go for a romantic picnic at Alleue Bleue Wine Farm. We had our own little spot between the vineyards for our picnic. We got up and went for a stroll through the vineyards and when we got back he said “Ek dink dis tyd dat ons, ons verhouding na die volgende vlak neem” (I think it is time we take our relationship to the next level) Then he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him!
How did you find the planning process?I resigned from my full-time job at the end of January 2011 and I enjoyed the freedom of planning our wedding. My friends and family joined in to help me plan with all the planning giving me direction and assistance. |

Where did you draw your planning inspiration from?I felt that your wedding day should be a reflection of the couple’s personalities. Fred and I are both spontaneous and fun-loving people and our wedding was just that! All the vibrant colours were a reflection of our personalities and people were free to enjoy the day with us and be themselves! |

What was the most memorable and special part of your wedding day?A friend and I went to buy perfume a week before the wedding and I got stuck on an Estee Lauder perfume. It smelled amazing but I wanted Lacoste -Touch of Pink. Just before the ceremony, Fred’s stepmother walked up to me and brought me a gift. She mentioned that it was from my future husband and it was wrapped in a beautiful letter. I opened the gift and it was the Lacoste perfume I wanted. I never told Fred that I wanted the perfume; he just bought it for me and attached a beautiful letter and poem with it! How special is that? |

Did you make use of any entertainment at your wedding reception? We had a band during the ceremony that played worship music before and during the service. My future husband had tears in his eyes when I came down the aisle, it was so special! A friend of ours, Reinhardt was the DJ at our wedding reception. |

Your décor and flowers. Do you have a specific reason why you chose what you did? Colours ect?A friend of mine Izobelle, came up to me one day, saying “Look at these flowers that I have made.” I was stunned at how beautiful they were and they were made from paper! I asked her if she would make them for my wedding. There were no traditional approaches to this wedding! The end result was mixtures of vibrant pink, lime green, purple, gold, burnt orange, rustic brown, gold and emerald green. |

What song did you choose for your opening and why?We chose Beloved by Tenth Avenue North as our opening song! The song has great significance too us seeing that I was a little tough one during our relationship and Fred had to always reel me back in! He was always steadfast and stable, loving me unconditionally without wavering! The song that we danced to is exactly that, that Jesus will never leave us nor forsake us, irrespective of what we do and that He loves us unconditionally even if we make mistakes! |

Anything you would tell other brides to be who are busy planning their big day?If anyone offers you assistance, take it! It’s amazing how you can arrange your whole wedding by allowing friends and family to assist you. You learn to trust people and in the process you can actually enjoy your wedding day! Remember that your wedding day should truly reflect who you are; it makes it so much more intimate and special! I see a wedding day as being an extended part of your house where people can relax, get comfy, enjoy themselves and have fun! |

You incorporated a lot of DIY elements. What is your take on this? Would you recommend it? Who were all involved in the DIY?Most of the décor was DIY, inspired by the flowers, colour books, lanterns and tablecloths! I feel that we all have the ability to create amazing masterpieces irrespective of how big or small it is! The most rewarding moment was to see everything come together a day before the wedding – please note that I didn’t do a rehearsal table layout before the time so taking the risk was definitely worth it! I have many creative friends and family members who helped me to source the materials and also assisted in making the décor. Some of the materials was hired and bought; let’s just say Mr Price Home is a very happy supplier of mine! |
