Preparing for your Honeymoon

Planning a honeymoon is one thing and there are many things to consider but packing for your honeymoon and the preparation once a destination has been decided, is another.
Claire Heesen from Africa on the Move gives you some basic tips for your preparation:
- Once you have decided on your destination and have planned around the seasons to ensure that you get decent weather, consider your clothing requirements. Make sure that you have prepared for the event of weather changing – even the warmest of places in summer can turn chilly when the rain comes.
- When packing toiletries try not to “over pack” as firstly they tend to weigh the most and secondly there are restrictions on what can be taken in the cabin of an aircraft. Place your toiletries in a plastic bag as you don’t want to arrive to find that your shampoo has leaked all over your clothes!
- Be informed regarding your destination – is it a malaria or yellow fever zone? Inoculations may be necessary and are sometimes a minimum requirement to re enter South Africa when you return. If you are not sure, visit www.traveldoctor.co.za . If you are on prescription medication, obtain a script or letter from your doctor and carry this with you.
- Leading on from the previous tip, probably one of the most important tips is to ensure that you have Travel Insurance. Medical costs can ruin a family, let alone a honeymoon! Visit www.tic.co.za and issue your own insurance policy online.
- Have you checked your Passport and do you need a visa for your destination? This is vital to check before you confirm a booking as there are costs to consider and well as the length of time it takes to obtain these important travel documents. Generally speaking, South African Passports need to be valid for at least six months beyond intended return date and have at least 2 – 6 blank pages. Check with your travel agent regarding the visa and entry requirements for the Country you intend to visit and make sure you are well informed.
- Memories last forever … When packing your camera, remember to include your battery charger and extra memory cards. Some like to keep diary so perhaps a notebook and pen to jot down experiences.
- How much cash to take? Are credit cards accepted? This goes back to being informed about your destination and what forms of payment are widely accepted. For best advice speak to your bank or a foreign exchange provider.
- Need to make a phone call home? Cell phones and Hotel phones can be very expensive. World call cards are available in most countries and can be used on hotel phones. Another option is to purchase a sim card when you arrive at the airport.
- Take a spare set of clothes as well as valuables in your hand luggage. It is welcome relief to have some clothes to change into in the event your baggage gets delayed or goes missing.
- Don’t over pack your bags. This will lead to heavy bags exceeding the airlines weight restrictions and nasty excess baggage costs.
