Big or small, in what cake will your love fall?
The wedding cake is as much of a tradition as all the other wedding nuances. Just like your overall theme, décor and style the design of the wedding cake is limited only to your imagination and budget. But to narrow down your options and arrive at the perfect wedding cake, there are a few things to consider. Establish your budget upfront. Once you know exactly how much you can spend, you can start chatting to wedding cake designers about what options will suit your budget and creative needs. Remember with enough creativity you can still get a stunning wedding cake on a smaller budget. Good designers can offer innovative alternatives.
If you are planning a large reception you can save a bit of money by having a smaller, well-designed cake for the public cutting and then have a larger simpler cake (in keeping with the theme) stored in the kitchen for the caterers to cut and serve to your guests.
Consider the various types of cakes that are available. Fruitcake is the traditional choice but it is slightly heavier than other options. Chocolate cake may be lighter but it isn't very traditional. Sponge cakes are much lighter than both and quite flexible with most other deserts. While carrot, hazelnut and other flavoured cakes may offer something different, be aware of any food allergies that your partner or family members may have. Chat to those closely involved in the planning to reach an agreement on the flavour and make sure you taste samples of all potential wedding cakes. You also need to decide on whether you want guests to take pieces of the cake away with them or if you want to serve it as dessert at the reception, as this affects the choice of cake.
Like everything else wedding related, make sure you book your cake well in advance with a good idea of the number of guests to cater for.
Have fun with all the wonderful possible combinations of colour and flavour and remember that your wedding cake is the perfect way to spoil your guests with some edible eye candy that captivates a bit of your unique style.
