Bridal Alert 15 June 2010

Coming into its own as a traditional wedding piece in the late 19th century, the wedding cake has experienced a colourful evolution of form, shape and contents.

For Wade van der Merwe of Cakes by Wade, “The wedding cake
is a focal point, a highlight for the bridal couple, but to be
an effective part of the greater visual of the day, its decoration
is as important as the venue.” Coming into its own as a
traditional wedding piece in the late 19th century, the wedding
cake has experienced a colourful evolution of form, shape and
contents. Having cast off the shackles of convention – did
you know that the original cake was made of crushed grains which
were broken over the bride’s head in the hope of increasing
her future fertility? - today’s wedding cake allows for
individual creativity and expression.
In our feature article we take a look at the wedding cake’s
path of origin. We share with you the input of a very modern cake
designer, Wade from Cakes from Wade, while Marius from Weddings
by Marius also offers recommendations and tips on what a modern
wedding cake should be and look like!
Enjoy!

Coming into its own as a traditional wedding piece in the late
19th century, the wedding cake has experienced a colourful evolution
of form, shape and contents. Having cast off the shackles of convention,
today’s wedding cake allows for individual creativity and
expression.
The original ‘wedding cake’, a flat wheat biscuit,
was broken over the bride’s head in order to secure her
future fertility as well as good fortune in her marriage. The
guests would scramble for a crumb for themselves, a custom that
led to the sharing of the modern traditional wedding cake. Read

Shifting
Shapes
Three-tiered cakes are no longer the way to go, currently
brides are mixing and matching forms – square, octagonal
and hexagonal confections are all gaining in popularity, particularly
with more contemporary brides.

“Set amongst the lush vineyards of the scenic Constantia
Valley, Constantia Uitsig Wine Estate offers a peaceful and elegant
setting providing the perfect location for your Special Day.”
Joy, Constantia Uitsig’s Marketing Officer, had a singular
wedding cake story to relate: “We had a couple who got married
at our estate and held their reception at La Colombe in December
2008. They had a Croquembouche wedding cake which was of course
held together with icing. Being December, the weather was really
warm and during the ceremony, the icing melted and the top half
of the cake slid off. Some of it landed in the garden and had
to be discarded, but some was salvaged by our events team and
La Colombe staff who managed to stick it all back together. They
added a few flowers to the top to cover the gaps et voila! And
all without the wedding party getting wind of a thing!”
Constantia
Uitsig is fit for a queen. On entering the venue, you find
yourself surrounded by vineyards that extend seemingly without
end. The venue breathes beauty and tranquillity, assuring an utterly
peaceful remove and the ideal preface to your honeymoon. The premises
exceeded my expectations, offering three internationally acclaimed
restaurants and a cricket oval. La Colombe is currently in the
top 12 restaurants in the world, and holds the top ranking in
South Africa! For more information on Constantia

Fresh
and Fluffy
Fresh flowers continue to be a popular accessory to wedding cakes.
Unfussy, simple flowers and blooms are replacing the more traditional,
often frivolous flowers of the past; the fashionable favourites
of the day include orchids, calla lilies and tulips. And don’t
forget the rose…

When deciding on a fragrance for your big day, try out
a few of your favourites first! Spray perfume from about
25cm away to allow it to 'open up' and breathe.
Then wear the fragrance for about an hour to let it develop
on your skin, then choose your favourite!
