The Correct Application of Blush

Have you ever gone makeup shopping and stood there, looking at rows and rows of colours and wondered, panic-stricken, “Which one is right for me?” In blush application, finding the correct color can be the difference between creating a small disaster on your face as opposed to creating a masterpiece of accentuating features.

I have created a small tutorial for you in order to identify your correct skin tone as well as the “how” and “where” to apply your blush once you’ve purchased the correct one. Please bear in mind that NONE of the photos taken have been edited in any way. I kept it this way because there is no point in editing photos to a magazine finish. It’s unrealistic and creates a completely unattainable look in real life.
Here is a photo taken of Monique. She is wearing no makeup.
In order to identify the tone of your skin, look at the inside of your wrist. Do you have more blue or green veins showing? If you have more blue veins, it means you have a cool skin tone. You can confirm this by the fact that you burn easily in the sun, and when you do, you go red instead of tan. Similarly, if you have more green veins on the inside of your wrist, and you can tan easily and go brown, you have a warm skin tone. We can immediately see that Monique has a cool skin tone.
Cool skin tones suit pinker shades, whereas warm skin tones suit peachier shades. If, of course, neither of these tones float-your-boat, and you’re stressed you might re-live the 80’s bright orange cheek if you chose a colour, you can always opt for a neutral tone. I recommend “Bush Baby” by MAC. Below is an example of a pink, a peach and a neutral shade.

So now you have the right colour, but where does it go? Simple! It goes directly on the apple of your cheek, towards your temple. Be careful to not let it go under your cheek-bone. You cannot attempt to highlight and contour your face with blush, you need different colors for that (I will show you how to do that in another tutorial).

Remember to sweep upwards from the apple of your cheek with your brush towards the temple.

If you like, and you have the products available, you can highlight your cheek bone to complete the look. A good tip to remember is that your blush should always complement the colour lips you’re going for. Don’t choose colours that aren’t in the same range. If you’re going for pink cheeks, stick to your pinkier lip shades etc.

And there you have it! Take a look again at the difference:

Thanks for taking the time to read through my tutorial. I hope you enjoyed it. Watch this space for more from Miss V next month.
Special thanks to my super friend and super photographer GeeCee www.geecee.co.za for helping me out, and to my wonderful model Monique Every.
