How to: Foundation Application

Beauty starts with great-looking skin. The right foundation will make you look like you're not wearing any foundation at all. You'll just have even-toned, great-looking skin.

Article by Joleta Keane

The reason we wear foundation is to even out our skin tone an texture. When applied correctly, the result is skin that look better than it did without foundation. Some women shy away from foundation because they associate it with thick pancake make-up that sometimes looks like a mask. But even the strongest make-up should have a natural-looking base.

FORMULA

Foundations are available in many different formulas. Choose on that is right for your skin and style and has a consistency you like to use. Use the following guidelines to choose your formula.

• TINTED MOISTURIZER - For normal/normal-to-dry skin. Gives a sheer, light-weight coverage and is an alternative to foundation. Provides a totally natural look.

• STICK FOUNDATION – For all skin types except oily. Provides easy spot coverage and is also buildable for medium to full coverage.

• LIQUID FOUNDATION – For dry to extra-dry skin. Hydrates and smoothes, providing medium to full coverage.

• OIL-FREE LIQUID FOUNDATION – For oily skin. For combination skin in the summer. Absorbs oil and smoothes while providing light to medium coverage.

• OIL-FREE CREAM FOUNDATION – For normal-to-oily skin. Absorbs oil, providing medium to full coverage. A good choice to cover acne and large pores.

• OIL-FREE POWDER COMPACT – For oily skin. Provides medium to full coverage. Because of the portable packaging, compact foundations are great for touch ups.

• MINERAL POWDERS – Suggested for very oily skin. (Be careful when choosing color. Oily skin can change color of powders, and they may appear dry and pasty.)

FINDING THE PERFECT SHADE

Once you have decided on the right formula of foundation, you need to find the right shade. The correct shade will disappear on the skin.

Test several shades of foundation on the side of your face, between the nose and side of the cheek. Make a stripe of foundation I the preferred formula from cheek to jawline, gently blending into the skin. Also test a shade lighter and a shade darker to comparison. The correct shade will disappear. Always test foundation in natural light.

If your skin tone gets darker in the summer or on vacation, you may need to adjust the foundation tone.

Stick foundation that is a shade or two lighter than the skin tone can be used for light under-eye coverage instead of concealer.

TOOLS

The right tools help you apply foundation quickly and easily, with great-looking results. Sponges, also called make-up wedges, are used with foundation. Make-up can be applied directly to the sponge or face and gently blended into the skin. Some prefer to use a foundation brush. The synthetic bristles of this brush type can be used with all foundation formulas for a smooth and even application. Fingers are the best tool for warming and blending make-up into the skin.

FOUNDATION APPLICATION

To get the even-toned, great-looking skin you want, you need to choose the right color, texture, tools and formulas. Always begin with a test to choose the color that's the closest match to your natural skin tone, and then follow the simple steps for proper application.

Bobbi Brown Make-up Manual

For my model I have chosen a liquid foundation from M.A.C, Studio Fix Fluid. Following Bobbi Brown's great techniques, it is so easy to choose the rights shade for my model.

I've decided to mix two shades together as this will give me the best shade for her skin. Using my foundation brush, I apply my first layer of foundation.

I love using this foundation brush (M.A.C 187) as it give me a flawless finish on the skin. Never use to much foundation on one go. Rather apply one layer after the other if you feel you need more coverage.

Remember to blend all the way down to the neck, even the chest if needed. Then jaw-line is one of the first places one can see a difference in the color of the face and the neck and it will look like you are wearing a mask. And there is nothing worse that seeing that line.

Make sure that you cover the entire face, blending thoroughly against the all hair lines.

Concealer can be applied before or after the foundation. Choose a color that is one or two shades lighter than your foundation. Apply with a concealer brush from the inner corner of the eye to the outer corner. Blend it in with your brush or using your fingers.

Using another foundation brush with shorter, firmer bristles, I make sure that the corners of the nose are well blended. Also cover up any spots or pigmentation that is still visible.

To set the foundation and prevent any shine, I'm using a light/medium shade mineralize powder.

Tip: If the foundation color and neck does not match 100%, instead of lightning the face, darken the neck with warm bronzer or a darker shade powder.

Now I have a perfect and flawless canvas to create beautiful make-up on. See my previous article - Smokey eyes.
